Student Centered Computing: A Community Approach

The session would share a student centered computing curricular framework that is used to bring awareness to a community issue. The computing activities will include computational music and gaming about the community issue that students select.
AIS and Artemis: An Oko-SAgGA and NASA Summer STEM Learning Experience

The Atlanta International School (AIS) Oko-SAgGA Summer STEM Experience is a STEM curriculum developed by Mercer University Ph.D. candidates Tynetta Jenkins, Ashlee Lee, and STEM Education Innovation Lab Fellows. Five female AIS students from 8th through 12th grades to embark on a ten-day STEM, Artemis, and space-themed engaging learning experience. The experience included activities such as a rocket power challenge, soil testing, aerial drones, low-altitude balloons, a visit to the Flight Museum, a tour of GA Tech's Aerospace and Engineering school, robotics, coding, and presentations by NASA scientists and astronaut Dr. Yvonne Cagle and Dr. Jeffrey Smith. We give an overview of the learning experience and a curriculum plan to recreate the experience for middle and high school students. We also share the impact of the learning experiences from the AIS students' perspective and how they are working to promote equitable learning experiences for metro-Atlanta students in summer 2022.

Zoomorphic taotie pattern from the Shang Dynasty and animation

What can K-16 students learn about the ancient Chinese Shang dynasty (1600-1046 BC) bronzes? What are the symmetrical motifs and patterns designs on the surface of these bronzes? What can these bronzes tell us about the society, technologies, and culture that Chinese people lived in more than 3000 years ago?
This secondary school project incorporated STEAM approach and art history. Creating a 3D mask showcased students’ understandings of symmetry, line, and 3D form. This project provided students an opportunity to learn about a different culture. In addition, by animating their 3-dimensional Taotie masks, students further demonstrated how to incorporate technology into their art creations which aligned with the Empowered Learner ISTE Standard. Using technology, the students set goals, worked towards achieving subjectives, and were able to demonstrate what they learned to their peers. Images of students' works and animations will be presented in this section.

Recognizing that it is exceptionally difficult for students ‘to be what they don’t see’, being exposed to and participating in hands on internships in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics) can be uplifting and powerful as a means of controlling one’s destiny. Students engaged in experiential learning become empowered and motivated to take challenging preparatory actions necessary for career readiness.
The Equity of Exposure will share information on how leading educators leverage community resources (local businesses, work-based learning experience programs, university labs, etc.) to provide STEAM internships for their students from underserved backgrounds. Attendees will hear from a leading educator and community representative who successfully connected student internship experiences with classroom activities, igniting excitement and passion for success inside and outside the classroom.
K-12 Standard Sustainability Curriculum - "The Big Picture"

Sustainability’s importance and climate change are spoken of increasingly in our society. Since 2017, numerous K-12 schools in metro Atlanta have convened regularly around stewarding sustainability in schools – including having an integrated, standard sustainability curriculum within their schools.
This sustainability curriculum focus has spawned interest among school, community, and business leaders to explore collaborating together to form partnerships that not only provide students with hands-on and real-life learning opportunities studying sustainability, but also establish a foundation for career paths in our community most closely aligned with “Green Jobs” and the “Green Economy” for future workforce development in areas like …
